A disposal that hums and refuses to turn is jammed or dead. The hum is the motor trying. The impeller is not moving. Do not reach into the splash guard with the switch still live.

Kill power first
Flip the wall switch off. If the unit has a cord under the sink, unplug it. If it is hardwired, flip the breaker that feeds the kitchen.
Press the red reset on the bottom of the disposer. A tripped overload feels like a dead unit. A hum after reset is a jam, not a breaker.
Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a humming disposal. It sits on the jam, etches the chamber, and makes the next visit worse.
The hex key under the sink
Most units have a hex socket in the center of the bottom. A 1/4-inch Allen key goes there. Turn it both ways until the plate moves freely.
If it will not budge, the jam is a bone, a fruit pit, or a utensil. That is a job for a licensed plumber, not a longer screwdriver from the top.
Once it turns, restore power and run cold water. If it spins and drains, you got lucky. If it hums again, the bearings or the motor are done.
Leak at the flange is a different call
A hum with a dry sink and a wet cabinet is often the sink flange or the dishwasher tailpiece, not the motor. Tighten the mounting ring only if you can see the hardware. A cracked housing is a replacement.
Grease that packed the kitchen branch will fill the sink even after the disposer spins. That is drain cleaning on the line, not another reset button.
When to call
Same-day Monday through Saturday if the sink is standing, the reset will not hold, or water is under the cabinet. Closed Sunday. We do not work overnight.
Bring the brand if you can read it. We replace InSinkErator and Waste King units when the motor is gone. We will not sell a new disposer on a branch that is already grease-walled.
