You want an active electrical contractor whose company name matches the truck. A plumber license does not cover the panel. An [electrician near me](/tampa-electrician/) search in Tampa returns Yelp, Reddit, and a map pack. Some of those shops have a handful of reviews. Some have a wrapped van and no number you can look up. None of that is the license. Florida electrical contractors carry an EC number. Read it before anyone opens the panel. ## What you are looking up Go to myfloridalicense.com and use the public licensee search. You can search the number they gave you, or the company name on the estimate. Do it before the appointment, not while they are standing in the garage. You want the license type to say electrical contractor, and the status to say active. A local business tax receipt from the city is a tax form. It is not a state contractor license. A handyman listing is not one either. An occupational license on a Facebook page is not one. The number Titan prints on electrical permits is EC13012958. Search that string. The record should come back to Titan Plumbing and Electric, at 8407 N Mitchell Ave, Tampa, FL 33604. If the name on the record is a different company, you are not hiring the people whose number you were given. The letters matter. EC is a certified electrical contractor. That license is statewide. An ER number is a registered electrical contractor, tied to specific counties. Either can be legitimate. A number that is not an electrical contractor at all is not. ## What the record has to match Check four things. Then stop. Active status. Delinquent, suspended, or null and void means they cannot pull the permit today, no matter what the ad says. The company name on the estimate. It has to be the name on the license, not a DBA they invented for the yard sign. Titan Plumbing and Electric is the name on EC13012958. The address. Match it to the shop they claim. Ours is 8407 N Mitchell Ave, Tampa, FL 33604. A license that lists a different city and a tech who will not explain it is a borrowed number. The trade. Electrical contractor. If the only active license under that name is plumbing, they can fix the [water heater](/plumbing/water-heater-services/) and they cannot rewire the circuit that feeds it. The qualifier is the person the state holds responsible. Ask who that is, and whether that person is pulling the permit. A helper on the truck is not the qualifier. The qualifier does not have to stand in your hallway for an outlet, but the permit has their license on it. ## EC is not CFC CFC1430231 is Titan’s plumbing license. It covers the water heater, the gas line, the drains, and the [repipe](/plumbing/repiping/). It does not cover a panel, a breaker, a new circuit, or a meter change. Hillsborough and the City of Tampa want an electrical contractor on electrical permits. A [plumber](/plumbing/)\-only truck can be licensed, insured, and still illegal for the panel. The insurance follows the license. If the work was outside the license, the policy argument gets ugly after a fire. These jobs need the EC number on the permit: - A [panel upgrade](/electrical/circuit-breaker-panel/), including a 100 amp Federal Pacific or any can that will not hold the AC - A new circuit for a dryer, a range, a tankless unit, or a well - An [EV charger](/electrical/ev-charger-installation/). That is a dedicated circuit and a load calc, not a cord over the drywall - A [standby generator](/electrical/home-standby-generators/) and the transfer switch - Rewiring cloth, aluminum, or knob-and-tube - A whole-house surge device landed in the panel A leaking tank, a clogged line, or a hose bib is the CFC license. Say which problem you have when you call so the right license is on the ticket. On a tankless install or a generator with a gas line, both numbers belong on the same job. One company can hold both. Titan does. Ask once. If they change the subject, do not book them. A number that looks right and belongs to someone else. This happens with stickers copied off a truck in a parking lot. The search takes a minute. Status that is not active. Do not let them talk you into “the renewal is in the mail.” A quote for a panel or a new circuit from a company that only shows CFC1430231, or only shows a business tax receipt. A request to skip the permit on a panel, a service change, or a generator. The permit is how the license gets checked. Skipping it is how a later sale or a claim finds unlicensed work. Reviews still matter after the license checks out. They do not replace it. A shop with 341 Google reviews and a dead license is a worse hire than a small shop with an active EC number. ## Same-day, with a limit Monday through Saturday we take a burning outlet, a breaker that will not reset, sparks, or a dead half of the house.
