# Polybutylene in a Carrollwood Village House

Plumbing October 2026

A pinhole under a Carrollwood Village sink is often the supply pipe, not the faucet. Houses built there from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s were plumbed with polybutylene on a lot of streets. The pipe is gray, sometimes blue or black, and it says PB2110. Chlorine in the city water works on it from the inside. The leak shows up at a crimp long before the whole line looks bad.

## Where that pipe shows up

Carrollwood Village Phase III, parts of Country Lake Estates, Cypress Run, and the early Northdale streets are the usual stops. Original Carrollwood, the 1955 to 1965 ranches, is a different house. Those have copper in the slab. A 2000s infill on the same block is usually PEX. The year on the appraisal is the first clue. The stamp on the pipe is the one that counts.

A [Carrollwood plumber](/carrollwood-plumber/) from our shop reads that stamp before anyone talks about a [repipe](/plumbing/repiping/). One leaking angle stop can be the fitting. Three leaks in a year, on a gray line, is the pipe.

## How to look at it before you call

You can see the supply without opening a wall. Start at the places the builder left the pipe in the open.

- Under the kitchen sink and the bathroom lavatories, on the lines feeding the angle stops
- At the [water heater](/plumbing/water-heater-services/), on the cold inlet and the hot outlet
- In the attic, where a Village ranch often ran the supply across the trusses
- At a hose bib on an exterior wall, if the stub is the same gray plastic

Bend it gently. Polybutylene flexes. White CPVC does not. CPVC is rigid, glued into fittings, and it snaps if you try to curve it. A gray line with a copper crimp ring, or a plastic barb and a clamp, is the PB pattern. If the letters on the pipe read PB2110, you have the answer. If they read CPVC or ASTM D2846, you are looking at a different material.

## What the leak actually does

The pipe does not burst the way a frozen copper line does. Chlorine in Hillsborough County water thins the wall from the inside. The first wet spot is usually a drip at a crimp, a damp ceiling under a bathroom, or a water heater that runs because hot water is leaving the line. A second leak a few months later, on a different fitting of the same gray pipe, means the rest of that generation is on the same clock.

A single failed angle stop on copper can be that valve. On PB2110, we treat the third leak in a year as the pipe, and we stop selling one fitting at a time.

## What a repipe covers

We pull the polybutylene and run a new supply in PEX-A. On a Carrollwood Village ranch the new lines go through the attic when the truss depth allows it, so we are not chasing every stub under the slab.

The job includes:

- A Hillsborough County permit
- The old gray pipe taken out, with a record you can hand an insurance carrier
- A pressure test before the walls close
- Drywall brought back to ready-to-paint
- One bathroom kept usable when the layout allows it

We do not price a whole house from a photo of one fitting. The attic, the slab crossings, and how many baths are on the line change the day. A 3-bedroom Village ranch is often two to three days. A house with a finished attic or a line that drops through a slab takes longer, and we say that when we walk it.

The neighborhood list, and which phase used which pipe, is on the [Carrollwood plumber](/carrollwood-plumber/) page. A wider [repipe](/plumbing/repiping/) is the same crew when the copper in an older ranch has failed too.

## What to tell the carrier

Florida carriers have been dropping houses that still have active polybutylene. They want the stamp, the locations, and proof the pipe came out. We write that down on the same visit as the repipe. We do not write a letter that says the pipe is fine if we have not seen the stamp.

If a seller told you the house was already repiped, look in the attic and at the water heater anyway. A partial job sometimes replaces the visible stubs and leaves the gray line in the ceiling.

Gray flexible pipe with PB2110 stamped on it is the supply. White rigid CPVC is a different material and a different job.
